Plastic Technology &
Tooling Development Centre starts to implement 3DQuickPress for the
progressive die design training. With the driving force of the Hong
Kong based manufacturers operated in Pearl River Delta , GuangDong , China , Pearl River Delta has become
the World fastest growing export-oriented manufacturing center. The
demand for high quality engineers to work for these manufacturers in
China
has grown extensively in the last 10 years. In parallel to
this industrial development, the Plastics and Tooling Technology
Development Centre (PTTDC) was formed by merging the former Plastics
Industry Training Centre and the former Precision Tooling Training
Centre in Hong Kong. It provides full-time courses, evening courses
and industry support services in plastics, product, tooling,
CAD/CAM/CAE and precision machining technologies with a total annual
training capacity of some 5,000 trainees.
Progressive die design
and manufacturing knowledge is very critical to the
Hong Kong manufacturers as they are shifting to produce high
precision metal products from conventional metal parts. Industries
like electronics, watches, metal products, automotive parts have the
strongest demand for skilled engineers. PTTDC has been providing
training in this field using 2D design and drafting approaches for
many years. Until recently, with careful study of the industrial
needs, Mr. K.T. Yeung, Centre Manager, and his staff team made a
decision to introduce brand-new concept of applying 3D
approach to handle progressive die design. Mr.
Yeung stated, “the success
model of Hong Kong manufacturers in
the last 15 years has changed rapidly from labor intensive
manufacturing to high-valued added manufacturing. The manufacturing
cycle in Hong Kong is turning to a stage that
local manufacturers are shifting critical design processes back
to Hong Kong to gain the advantage of
time-to-market and better control of information. It is proven that
the graduates from our PTTDC may either get technical posts in the
manufacturers fairly easily or they may get the continuous education
from other local universities or Institutes of Vocational
Education.”
K.M. Chan of the
Precision Metal Tooling Unit of PTTDC organized a hands-on section
of a newly developed 3D progressive die design solution,
3DQuickPress, in 2004. The overall reaction from the trainees was
overwhelming. “In a much shorter time frame, we can really teach the
trainees a complete progressive die design concept. They may
finish a virtual progressive die design process in the SolidWorks
environment. We can
hardly achieve the result if we keep on using the conventional 2D approach
to teach the young engineers to pick up the skill set of progressive
die design.”
Mr. K.T. Yeung’s center
has installed with 100 seats of 3DQuickPress. Being one of the
largest 3DQuickPress training facilities in Asia, PTTDC is going to
conduct training
to Hong
Kong manufacturers from fall, 2005.
About Intelligent
CAD/CAM Technology Limited
Intelligent CAD/CAM
Technology Ltd. (ICT), the distributor of SolidWorks and
3DQuickPress in Hong Kong and China , is a general partnership
specializing in solving computer-aided design and manufacture
(CAD/CAM) problems through careful analysis and development. ICT is
firmly established as a leading innovator in the rapidly expanding
high technology field of CAD/CAM and computer-aided-engineering
(CAE), product data management (PDM), as well as 3D digitizing
(contact and non-contact) and 3D printing technology. ICT’s
technology and management capabilities in CAD/CAM/CAE/PDM and
computer programming assure industrial customers a trouble-free and
professional business relationship. Joint education
collaboration between ICT and PTTDC has been operational since 1997.
VTC’s PTTDC was the first institute which applied ICT/SolidWorks
solution to train new generation of design engineers. With the
success of SolidWorks training, PTTDC expanded the usage of
SolidWorks into the progressive die design in metal industries using
3DQuickPress, the best SolidWorks solution partner in the die making
industries. For further information, visit the company’s Web site
